The GOP Has Just Passed a Resolution Condemning White Supremacy – They Insist It Has Nothing to Do With Trump

RNC Chair: ‘We Hope Democrats Will Join Us in Condemning ALL Groups That Commit Violence and Hate’

President Donald Trump’s remarks insisting Charlottesville violence was evident “on many sides,” and later, came from “both sides,” including the “alt-left,” has marred his entire albeit nascent administration. The Republican Party at its annual summer meeting right now has just passed a resolution condemning white supremacism, and insists it has absolutely nothing to do with the president’s widely condemned remarks likening violence and even murder by white supremacists to the protests by people who were protesting the hate groups.

“This has nothing to do with the president,” New Jersey RNC committeeman Bill Palatucci, who is sponsoring the resolution, tells The Washington Post. “This is the RNC saying that racism and bigotry have no place in America.”

“The core issue was for us as RNC members to clearly and loudly denounce white supremacists,” Palatucci adds. “There can be no hesitation for the Party of Lincoln.”

Except, the party’s leader did hesitate, and it’s been in the news cycle ever since the August 12 rally that led to a white supremacist allegedly plowing his car into a group of counter-protestors, killing Heather Heyer.

In a stunning move of partisan hackery, Ronna McDaniel, the Chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, announced Friday, “We hope Democrats will join us in condemning ALL groups that commit violence and hate,” according to Nashville Post reporter Stephen Elliott. Democrats were out in front from the very beginning of the attacks in Charlottesville condemning all racist hate groups, the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, white nationalists, and the so-called “alt-right.”

Palatucci’s resolution “states that ‘the racist beliefs of Nazis, the KKK, white supremacists and others are completely inconsistent with the Republican Party’s platform,’ and urges that ‘swift and certain justice be meted out to domestic terrorists.’ Most of the remaining text focuses on the history of the party, and the need for colorblind policy and politics.”

Like all party resolutions, it carries no weight or authority. No party cannot enforce their resolutions, nor can they take away “membership” of anyone who self-identifies as a member, even if they are running for elected office.

Elliott tweeted a copy of the resolution. Interestingly, it is dated August 12, the day Heather Heyer was murdered:
