‘Stop The F*gs’: Anti-Gay Activists Are Attacking Same-Sex Marriage Via This Vile Poster

Promotes Discredited Study

A vile poster attacking same-sex marriage, same-sex parents, and citing a discredited “study” by an American Catholic priest is being used by anti-gay activists in Australia to fight the country’s impending plebiscite on marriage equality. The poster includes an illustration depicting a young child huddled in a protective manner and surrounded by two rainbow-colored belts which suggest physical abuse. It has been posted on the streets of Melbourne, Australia, according to ABC News of Australia.

At the top of the poster are the words, “Stop the F*gs,” just in case the illustration is insufficient.

It includes the false claim that “92 per cent of children raised by gay parents are abused. 51 per cent have depression. 72 per cent are obese.”

Again that’s false.

The poster even cites its source, a study by Rev. Paul Sullins, Ph.D., a tenured Associate Professor at The Catholic University of America, a private religious institution in Washington, D.C.

ABC News adds that Sullins’ “research has been widely discredited.”

Australia’s political leaders, including former prime minister Tony Abbott, insisted that the civil rights of same-sex couples and LGBTQI people should be put to a vote by their fellow citizens. Equality advocates have long fought this position, warning that posters and other forms of hate speech would soon crop up if in the national debate.

Australia’s Star Observer reports “LGBTI rights advocate and just.equal spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said the hate displayed in the posters will shock and disgust the majority of Australians.”

“We call upon Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to condemn this vilification and set out the parameters for respectful debate,” he said.

“We have long warned the Government that a plebiscite or postal vote on marriage equality would amplify extremist and hateful views – yet the Prime Minister assured us of a respectful debate.

“It is now incumbent on the Prime Minister, who initiated the postal vote campaign, to take responsibility and denounce anti-LGBTI vilification like this poster.”

Columbia Law School “identified 79 scholarly studies that met our criteria for adding to knowledge about the wellbeing of children with gay or lesbian parents. Of those studies, 75 concluded that children of gay or lesbian parents fare no worse than other children.”

Australians will vote by mail on marriage equality in a “postal plebiscite” between Sept. 12 and Nov. 7.
