Trump Says Happy Independence Day by Posting Video of Choir From Extremist’s Megachurch Singing ‘Make America Great Again’

A Vision of Fascistic Nationalism That Ignores America’s Beautiful Diversity and Promise of Freedom and Equality for All

President Donald Trump got off to an early start Tuesday morning wishing America a Happy Independence Day by posting to Twitter a video of megachurch choir singing a song they composed, named after Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” The church is the First Baptist Dallas Church, headed by a far right wing Christian extremist, Dr. Robert Jeffress.

Jeffress is anti-gay. He’s also anti-Islam. And anti-Jewish. Anti-Mormon. Even anti-Catholic.

The video reflects well Donald Trump’s beliefs.

A group of Christians (with apparently few people of color) standing in front of a huge American flag, singing a song named after Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, honoring Donald Trump, in an exercise of fascistic nationalism.

The song honoring Trump was sung at an event in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, where Trump shared the stage with Southern Baptist Pastor Jeffress.

Pastor Jeffress is a Fox News contributor who also has his own syndicated television show that appears on more than 1200 stations across the nation. He held a private service on Inauguration Day attended by Donald and Melania Trump and Mike and Karen Pence.

“Jeffress has attacked LGBT people as leading ‘miserable’ and ‘filthy’ lives and said that ‘homosexuality is perverse, it represents a degradation of a person’s mind,'” Media Matters has reported. “In 2015, Jeffers cited approval of gay marriage as a sign of the coming apocalypse. In addition to his anti-LGBT rhetoric, Jeffers has called Catholicism a ‘cult-like, pagan religion,’ Islam an ‘evil, evil religion,’ Mormonism a ‘cult’ from the ‘pit of hell,’ and Judaism and Hinduism religions that lead people to ‘an eternity of separation from God in Hell.'”

That’s the person Trump is literally putting his faith in.

“Tonight, we have been inspired by music that fills our hearts, stirs our souls and reminds us all of who we are: one nation, under God” Trump said.

“My administration will always support and defend your religious liberty,” the President promised. “We don’t want to see God forced out of the public square, driven out of our schools or pushed out of our civic life.”

During the campaign, Trump several times said, “Imagine what our country could accomplish if we started working together as one people, under one God, saluting one flag.”

It’s a vision of fascistic nationalism that ignores America’s beautiful diversity and promise of freedom and equality for all.
