Paul Ryan’s ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Response to Trump’s Attempts to Force Attorney General Out Draw Furious Rebukes
Ryan Blasted for Not Standing Up for the Rule of Law
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is now under fire for his tepid response to the President of the United States once again appearing to obstruct justice by trying to force Attorney General Jeff Sessions to quit. Trump’s firing of FBI Director Jim Comey was a major turning point in the short history of his administration and it’s clear the President is attempting to avoid the monumental outrage that act created.
“The president gets to decide what his personnel is,” was Ryan’s response when asked about President Trump appearing to lay the groundwork to fire Sessions, then make a recess appointment of a new AG. Doing so would allow him to replace Sessions with someone would would then fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
“He determines who is hired and fired in the executive branch,” Ryan continued. “That’s his prerogative.”

Ryan went on to say “it’s up to the President to decide what his personnel decisions is.”

Washington Post’s Greg Sargent:
Let’s be clear on this. @SpeakerRyan will not view it as a problem if Trump fires Sessions with explicit aim of removing Mueller later: https://t.co/j8nS9Y9n4D

Pundit Jon Favreau:
Even I didn’t expect @SpeakerRyan to give Trump permission to fire the man investigating him for obstruction. This is beyond pathetic. https://t.co/seQHKy5Cko

What many believe Ryan should have done was respond by issuing a caution to President Trump that he is once again obstructing justice and interfering with the rule of law.
Former independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin:
.@SpeakerRyan pretends that the President’s abuses of power are just a matter of process. When the country needed his leadership he cowered. https://t.co/3lHv3jzxSh

Conservative Russian-American historian, frequent cable news commentator:
What he should have said: any attempt to end Mueller probe by firing Sessions will cause Congress to pass independent counsel law. https://t.co/tq1kgvQIWH

Meanwhile, others are attacking those who are standing up for Sessions rather than standing up for the rule of law.
Alabama GOP Senator posted these tweets:
During the past twenty years that I have served with Jeff Sessions in the Senate, I have had the opportunity to know him well. 1/3
— Richard Shelby (@SenShelby) July 25, 2017
Jeff Sessions is a man of integrity, loyalty, and extraordinary character. 2/3
— Richard Shelby (@SenShelby) July 25, 2017
I join the people of Alabama in giving Jeff Sessions my deep respect and unwavering support. 3/3

NBC News’ Benjy Sarlin responded:
Still framing this as “Why are you mean to our good friend, Jeff?” rather than “Why are you attacking the rule of law?” https://t.co/RBmw8nqpGE

Sen. Lindsey Graham both stood up for Sessions and the rule of law:
