Release Will Come in October
Former NFL star O.J. Simpson, in jail after being convicted for a 2007 kidnapping and robbery incident, has been granted parole after serving nine years of his 33-year sentence. The Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners, led by chairwoman Connie Bisbee, for more than one and a quarter hours explained the procedure, including consideration of “aggravating and mitigating factors,” and listened to Simpson’s daughter, Simpson, and robbery victim Bruce Fromong testify.Â
“I haven’t made any excuses in the nine years that I’ve been here and I’m not trying to make an excuse now,” Simpson told the board, as ABC News reports. “I am sorry that things turned out the way they did,” he said, his voice slightly shaking.
Simpson told the board were he released he would “like to get back to my family and friends,” and would consider a career in the media, perhaps blogging or setting up a webcast.
Simpson appeared confident during the hearing and before the ruling was announced.
Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of the brutal murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ron Goldman. A civil court awarded the victims’ families $33.5 million for their wrongful deaths.
