Trump ‘Clearly Terrified of the British Public’
Donald Trump has reportedly postponed his state visit to Britain “until the British public supports him coming.â€
According to The Guardian, the president spoke with British Prime Minister Theresa May, advising he “did not want to come if there were large-scale protests.†May, whose own political future seems uncertain following the U.K.’s snap election, had invited Donald Trump to Britain shortly after his inauguration.
A spokesman for the Prime Minister’s office declined to verify the reports to the BBC, calling it “speculation about the contents of private phone conversations.†They further noted that “the Queen extended an invitation to President Trump to visit the UK and there is no change to those plans.â€
The visit had already been called into question following Donald Trump’s repeated attacks on London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Trump lashed out at the city’s mayor, criticizing its leader for trying to console the people of London following the terror attacks that left seven dead.
Khan himself had called on Theresa May to cancel Trump’s visit, and the Prime Minister pointed out that Khan was “doing a good job and it’s wrong to say anything else.â€
Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron of the U.K. said that Trump was “clearly terrified of the British public,†adding that “he knows that the British people find his politics appalling and that they won’t be scared to make their views known.â€
The U.K.’s Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn welcomed the trip’s cancellation on Twitter, citing Trump’s attack on Khan and the president’s decision to withdraw the United States from the historic Paris Climate Agreement:Â
In early November, polling from the U.K.’s Independent found that “an overwhelming majority of British people think Donald Trump’s arrival in the White House makes the world a more dangerous place†and that his election “set a dangerous precedent for future votes.â€
