Here’s What You Need to Start Your Day
Good Monday morning! It’s a big Supreme Court day today!
Here are five things you need to know for today:
- First, Happy Obergefell Day! Two years ago today the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples do have the right to marry. Happy anniversary to all! And thanks to Jim Obergefell, and all the plaintiffs, for having the courage to fight for us all.
- So, today we will find out if the rumors are true. Is SCOTUS Justice Anthony Kennedy going to retire? It’s been a rumor for weeks. If Kennedy were to leave, Trump would get to place another far right wing extremist on the bench, which could lead to Roe v. Wade and even Obergefell being overturned. Court watchers like David Lat say no.Â
- And finally, today is technically the last day of the Court’s session. We are still waiting to hear if the court will take up the Masterpiece Cake Shop case – a Christian baker who refuses to bake wedding cakes for same-sex couples.Â
- We could also hear if the Court will review Trump’s Muslim travel ban. Buzzfeed Legal Editor Chris Geidner has a good thread on today’s possibilities:
- Also today: health care is front and center. The Congressional Budget Office is expected to release its score on the Senate “health care” bill that cuts $800 billion from Medicaid, soon, possibly today. It is expected the CBO will say 15 million to 22 million will lose coverage under the Senate version.
