Trump Wrongly Attacks Germany Over NATO and Trade, and the ‘Fake News’ Media Over Russia

President Donald Trump gave the American people a vacation from his insane tweets last week during his overseas trip, where “Fox & Friends” was not readily available. But as soon as he returned, so did his untethered tweeting. And the President kicked off this week with a small tweetstorm attacking Germany over NATOO and trade, and the “fake news” and Russia.

“We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change,” Trump said on Twitter Tuesday morning.

Of course, Trump’s tweet reveal the lack of basic understanding he has about trade and about NATO.

Germany doesn’t enter into trade agreements as a sole entity. Trade deals are done as a part of the European Union. Also, their GDP is about one-fifth of America’s, and their population is about one-fourth of America’s. And countries don’t pay into NATO. They agree to spend 2% of their GDP on their own military.

(Instead of worrying about how much Germany is spending on its military, perhaps Trump, and Americans, should be asking why the U.S. is spending so much on ours.)

But his second tweet Tuesday was wholly inane.

“Russian officials must be laughing at the U.S. & how a lame excuse for why the Dems lost the election has taken over the Fake News,” Trump wrote. 

The last thing Americans care about is what Russian officials think. But Americans, with the exception of Donald Trump, do care about what one of our top allies, Germany, thinks, including about Russia’s hacking and interference in elections.

All 17 U.S. Intelligence agencies agree Russia interfered in our elections. And the head of Germany’s intelligence agency earlier this month said: “We are finding increasingly aggressive cyber espionage.”

“Hans-Georg Maassen, head of the BfV agency, said spies are keeping a “very close watch” on threats as the country gears up for September’s vote,” the Independent reported May 4. The BfV is Germany’s intelligence agency, Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz.

“We expect further attacks, and we are keeping a very close watch on the threats,” Mr Maassen told a cyber security conference in Potsdam.

“Large amounts of data” were seized during a previous attack on the Bundestag in May 2015, which was blamed on Russian hacking group APT28, and there are fears the information could now be used to influence the vote.

Mr Maassen also warned of a “disinformation” campaign, citing false stories on the rape of a German-Russian girl called Lisa that were spread by Russian media alongside several other prominent incidents of “fake news”.

Trump’s attacks on the “fake news” are getting old. He is losing his base. His disinformation campaign is a joke, albeit a dangerous one.
