REPORT: Comey ‘Hopes’ Trump Taped Their Conversations

‘If There Is a Tape, There’s Nothing He Is Worried About’

According to NBC News Intelligence and national security reporter Ken Dilanian, a source close to Jim Comey says the fired former FBI Director “hopes” President Donald Trump taped their conversations. “He hopes there are tapes. That would be perfect,” Dilanian says his source tells him.

Trump Friday morning posted a threatening tweet saying “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”

CNN, citing “a source familiar with the matter,” adds that Comey is “not worried about any tapes,” and says “if there is a tape, there’s nothing he is worried about.”

Many have noted that Trump could have violated several laws.

Recording someone without their permission in certain states or locales can be a crime, and threatening a witness can be a crime.

Meanwhile, at least two members of Congress have publicly requested the Trump administration reveal if there are tapes, and if so, what is on them.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the House Intelligence Committee’s Ranking Member, called for the tapes to be provided to Congress:

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi‏ (D-IL) issued a statement Friday saying, “I would respectfully request that the White House Counsel provide the House Oversight Committee with all tapes of the President’s communications with former FBI Director James Comey, of President Trump’s meeting with Russian officials which was closed to American press but not their Russian counterparts, and of any conversations regarding the hiring or firing of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. These White House tapes could accelerate current investigations as previous tapes have aided past inquiries.”
