Morning Briefing: 5 Things for Thursday – Appointment of Special Counsel Changes Everything

Here’s What You Need to Start Your Day

Good Thursday Morning!

Yesterday was possibly one of the most major news story days in recent history. There’s so much happening on the Trump and Russia front there were new developments nearly every hour. We’ll do our best to help you stay on top of it all.

So here’s what you need to know to start your day:

  • Former Bush/Obama FBI Director Robert Mueller has been appointed as the special counsel to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. He is highly respected on the left and the right. And he has broad prosecutorial powers and it’s expected he will use them, meaning there likely will be criminal charges against some people by the time he’s done. Bringing in Mueller pretty much changes everything:

  • Some have expressed concerns that his law firm, from which he has now resigned, also has represented Paul Manafort, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner. It’s a valid concern, although Mueller “didn’t play any part in the firm’s work for Manafort, Ivanka Trump or Kushner,” the firm says. (Politico)
  • Today at 2:30 PM EDT Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller, will brief the full Senate on the decision and the firing of Jim Comey.
  • The FCC will vote at 10:30 AM EDT today to wreck net neutrality. (C-SPAN)
