Morning Briefing: 5 Things for Monday – Trump Back in Court of Appeals and Public Opinion

5 Things You Need to Know for Today

Good Monday morning! Hope you had a great weekend and a happy Mother’s Day.

Last week was literally the worst week of the Donald Trump presidency. This weekend will mark Trump having been in office for four months. Will this week get any better?

Here are 5 things you need to know to start your day:

  • The Trump administration is back in court today – Trump’s least favorite, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which will once again hear arguments on his unconstitutional Muslim travel ban. Starting at 12:30 PM EDT you can watch live on C-SPAN or on the court’s website. (L.A. Times)
  • Trump’s firing of Jim Comey is wildly unpopular. Just 29% approve of his actions, but one-third of Americans are unsure (WSJ). And Gallup’s latest daily tracking poll shows Trump nearing his historic worst job approval numbers, with 56% disapproval and just 39% approval.
  • Trump, despite his penchant for polls, refuses to do anything to help himself. The President on Mother’s Day chose to visit not his wife, the mother of his youngest child, but one of his golf courses.
  • “Trump has pressured MSNBC President Phil Griffin to fire [Lawrence] O’Donnell on multiple occasions.” (HuffPost)
  • Trump expected to name Callista Gingrich, Newt Gingrich’s third wife and his former mistress, as the U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican. Like most of Trump’s nominees, Gingrich has almost no relevant experience for the position. (NY Times)
