Comey Had Said He Would Only Testify in Public
Former FBI Director James Comey will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Chairman Richard Burr and Ranking Member Mark Warner have just announced. The announcement, ironically, comes just a few hours after news broke that President Donald Trump in a closed Oval Office meeting told Russian officials Comey was “crazy” and “a nut job.”
The hearing will be scheduled after Memorial Day.
Comey, who was fired by President Donald Trump last week in what now appears to be an attempt to obstruct the investigation into Russian and the Trump White House, had said through associates he wanted to testify but would do so only in a public setting.
That right has apparently been granted.
“The Committee looks forward to receiving testimony from the former Director on his role in the development of the Intelligence Community Assessment on Russian interference in the 2016 US elections, and I am hopeful that he will clarify for the American people recent events that have been broadly reported in the media,†Chairman Burr said in a statement just released.
Senator Warner added: “I also expect that Director Comey will be able to shed light on issues critical to this Committee’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.”
“Director Comey served his country with honor for many years, and he deserves an opportunity to tell his story. Moreover, the American people deserve an opportunity to hear it.”
