Jake Tapper: Comey Fired Because of Trump Irritation With FBI’s ‘Accelerating’ Russia Investigation

‘Comey Never Provided Trump With Assurance of Loyalty’

CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead” reports there are two main reasons President Donald Trump fired Jim Comey on Tuesday. First, President Trump was irritated with the FBI’s “accelerating” investigation into Russia and possible collusion with Trump operatives. And second, that Comey did not satisfy Trump’s need for absolute loyalty.

“The fact that the FBI’s investigation into possible Trump team collusion with Russia in the 2016 election was not only not going anywhere — the investigation was accelerating,” Tapper writes at CNN and says in his opening Wednesday afternoon. “Comey never provided the President with any assurance of personal loyalty,” he adds.

Tapper cites “a source close to the now-former FBI director.”

CNN also makes clear that collusion has not – contrary to what Trump and his administration claim – been ruled out:

Tapper notes that just last week Trump tweeted, “FBI Director Comey was the best thing that ever happened to Hillary Clinton in that he gave her a free pass for many bad deeds!” But now he’s angry about the way Comey treated Clinton?

That doesn’t match up.
