Democrats Rally After Trump Calls for a ‘Shutdown’ of the Government

House and Senate Democrats Express Anger Over Trump’s Remarks

President Donald Trump, finally realizing that the bill agreed upon by Democrats and Republicans averting a government shutdown was a thorough repudiation of his policies, late Tuesday morning called for a “good ‘shutdown'” of the federal government this fall. Democrats are rallying, furious that the President would make such an outrageous statement.

“The reason for the plan negotiated between the Republicans and Democrats is that we need 60 votes in the Senate which are not there!” Trump tweeted in apparent defense of the budget deal, which would fund the government until October 1. “We….either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good ‘shutdown’ in September to fix mess!”

Trump and members of his administration had been praising the bill, which includes funding for Planned Parenthood and many federal agencies Trump’s supposed budget outline had called to be defunded and dismantled. It also does not fund his border wall.

In other words, Trump, after watching the morning news shows, now feels it was not a good deal for his agenda.

House and Senate Democrats expressed anger over his remarks.

“It’s time for Speaker Ryan and the Republican Party to stage an intervention,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said, as reported by CQ Rollcall’s Kellie Mejdrich.

Democrats addressed Trump’s remarks in their weekly address (video above) and on Twitter (below).
