BREAKING: Emmanuel Macron Defeats Marine Le Pen, Elected President of France (Video)

“A New Chapter of Hope and Confidence Is Opening”

Centrist Emmanuel Macron has defeated far right white nationalist Marine Le Pen in the 2017 French presidential election, with a projected 65.1 percent of the vote.

French network France24 projected the win as polls closed around 2 P.M. EDT:

As The New York Times reported, “a victory by Mr. Macron [offers] significant relief to the European Union, which Ms. Le Pen had threatened to leave, a step that would have fundamentally destabilized the bloc.”

The win follows a massive hacking of Macron’s campaign emails, which an En March! Party spokesperson noted was an “obvious attempt at destabilizing democracy, as has already been seen in the US during the last presidential campaign.” The electoral commission ordered the French media not to publish the contents of the leaked emails.

You can watch live coverage here via France24’s English channel:

At 39, Emmanuel Macron will become the youngest president in the 59-year history of France’s Fifth Republic. “A new chapter of hope and confidence [is] opening,” Macron told Agence France-Presse.
