Watch Live Now: Washington DC’s March for Science

‘The Application of Science to Policy is Not a Partisan Issue’

Tens of thousands of Americans are expected to gather today in Washington, all in the name of Science. Coinciding with Earth Day, the March for Science aims to “defend the role science plays in our health, safety, economies, and governments.” Satellite marches are planned in over 600 cities across the country and worldwide.

Scientists, Science enthusiasts and advocates will begin the formal rally in Washington D.C. this morning at 10 AM EDT, with the program including “speeches and trainings with scientists and civic organizers, musical performances, and a march through the streets.” The march itself is currently scheduled for 2 PM EDT, from Constitution Avenue to Union Square in Capitol Hill.

“The application of science to policy is not a partisan issue,” the March’s website reads. “Anti-science agendas and policies have been advanced by politicians on both sides of the aisle, and they harm everyone – without exception.”

“Science should neither serve special interests nor be rejected based on personal convictions,” it continues. “At its core, science is a tool for seeking answers. It can and should influence policy and guide our long-term decision-making.”

“It’s not just about Donald Trump,” the Democratic congressman who runs the American Association for the Advancement of Science told USA Today. “But there is also no question that marchers are saying ‘when the shoe fits.’”
