WATCH: Colbert Unleashes Vladimir Putin, Gay Icon

‘Seriously, You Must Work or I Will Have You Killed’

Reports surfaced this week that an image depicting Vladimir Putin “with eyes and lips made up” with a “supposed non-standard sexual orientation” had been banned in Russia. It remains unclear which image (of many) was banned.

On Friday, Stephen Colbert of The Late Show offered his take. “I’d like to show you the particular image that offended the Kremlin,” he advised, “but because it has been banned, even ‘Russian news outlets are having trouble reporting exactly which image of the Internet’s many Putin-gay-clown memes is now illegal to share.”

Upon further review the potential banned images, the host joked that the show had found a picture of Putin that “some would say is by far the gayest of all time,” leading to further speculation:

“You be you,” the host insisted.

“Because this is America—for now—and we can do anything we want,” Colbert continued, “The Late Show has put together our own artistic interpretation of Vladimir Putin, gay icon.” Their interpretation, below, proceeded to offer a rouge-faced Putin, flexing and in cut-off jean shorts, singing a parody of RuPaul’s Cover Girl.

The video even featured a special cameo.
