Trump Would Work With Democrats for “Not as Good a Form of Healthcare”

“Then the Freedom Caucus Loses So Big”

Donald Trump, who just this morning tweeted about the love and strength of the Republican Party, again threatened the far right wing House Freedom Caucus Republicans who he blames for his failure to repeal and replace ObamaCare. This time, with Democrats.

In an interview with the Financial Times today, as reported by The Hill, Trump insisted that healthcare discussions are ongoing. (Including, apparently, on the golf course—again.) When asked if he was willing to work with Democrats to pass healthcare reform, Trump signaled that he was.

“If we don’t get what we want,” Trump said, “we will make a deal with the Democrats and we will have – in my opinion – not as good a form of healthcare and it will be a bipartisan form of healthcare.”

Should he choose to work with Democrats, he said, then “the Freedom Caucus loses so big.” 

In the same tweet in which Trump attacked the Freedom Caucus for their stance on his failed attempt to repeal and replace ObamaCare, Trump also attacked Democrats:

“…I will get the Democrats if I go the second way,” Trump said. “The second way, which I hate to see, then the Freedom Caucus loses so big and I hate to see that, because… our plan is going to be a very good plan.”

“When I say our plan,” he continued, “not phase one just: phase one, two and three added up is a great plan.”

It remains unclear why Trump, a self-proclaimed “deal maker,” would believe that threatening 36 members of his own party (and the entirety of Democrats) would lead to more successful healthcare negotiations.
