This North Carolina Lawmaker Just Compared Abraham Lincoln to Hitler

The Republican state legislator who on Tuesday filed a bill that declares all marriages of same-sex couples “null and void,” on Wednesday afternoon took to Facebook to respond to comments. Hours ago, his responses included calling the late President Abraham Lincoln, whom he compared to Hitler, a “tyrant,” said the Civil War was both unnecessary and unconstitutional, offered support for a medically questionable bill that advocates for abortion reversal, and lamented the so-called “repeal” of the state’s anti-LGBT law HB2.

Republican state Rep. Larry Pittman, a Christian minister, said on his own Facebook post from last month, “if Hitler had won, should the world just get over it? Lincoln was the same sort if [sic] tyrant, and personally responsible for the deaths of over 800,000 Americans in a war that was unnecessary and unconstitutional,” as Raw Story’s David Ferguson reported.

Rep. Pittman also announced that the laws of humankind must be based on the Christian God’s word.

“There is no legitimate basis for law without God’s Word. Everything else is just human opinion. You can’t even outlaw murder with nothing more than human opinion to make the law. It does not have the lasting authority and legitimacy of God’s Word.”

Pittman also suggested election fraud was responsible for now-Governor Roy Cooper’s win over Pat McCrory.

“The election of Roy Cooper, aided by the magical appearance of some 90,000 votes late in the evening, was not about this issue or HB2. It was because of McCrory’s failure to stop the I-77 tolls and his betrayal of the commercial fishermen, among other things.”

On the sweeping law known as HB2 that, among other things, banned transgender people from using restrooms that correspond with their gender identity, Pittman said:

“HB 2 was the right thing to do. We should have stood by it. What I learned is how cheaply some people would sell out to money and pressure to abandon and repeal a good law.”

And on the bill he introduced Tuesday, as one of three primary sponsors, banning and nullifying same-sex marriage, despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, Pittman wrote:

“It would not be a reinstatement” of a ban on same-sex marriage. “It would be upholding the law of this State in spite of the opinion of a federal court that had no business interfering.”

That, along with much of what Pittman wrote, is false. The legislation claims the 10th Amendment gives states the right to overrule the U.S. Supreme Court, which, again, is false.

State Democrats are furious.

“Rep. Pittman and his ultra-conservative allies in the General Assembly have no sense of decency, no sense of shame and no sense of historical fact,” state Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Goodwin said in a statement, The Charlotte Observer reports. “I call on North Carolina’s Republican leaders to immediately condemn these outrageous and offensive statements.”
