Nearly 3 Out of 4 Americans Want Independent Commission to Investigate Russia and Trump Team

61% Don’t Trust Congress to Investigate

Almost three out of four Americans want an independent, non-partisan commission to investigate Russia’s interference in the U.S presidential election, including what contacts Russia had with the Trump team. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds 73% prefer an independent commission, while just 16 percent say Congress should be in charge.

That’s not to say they don’t want Congress to investigate. The majority of Americans also want a congressional investigation, in addition to an independent commission.

Not surprisingly, 84% of Democrats and 51% of independents want an independent commission. The majority of Republicans, 53%, do not. There are not currently any public plans to form an independent commission.

Also unsurprisingly, a strong majority of Americans, 61%, do not trust Congress with investigating Russia and Trump.

Both the House and Senate investigations have had significant problems, caused by their respective Republican chairs.

On Twitter, the hashtag #independentinvestigation is very active.
