‘Just Don’t Call It Marriage’: GOP Congressman Shares His Views at Town Hall (Video)

Rep. Conaway Is Now Head of House Intelligence Russia Investigation

U.S. Congressman Mike Conaway (R-TX) late last week held a town hall in Brownwood, Texas. While it was announced just that morning, enough of his constituents were able to show up. 

One man asked Conaway if he still opposes marriage for same-sex couples.

He does.

“You were against gay marriage, you opposed most of the gay rights issues that have come up. Are you anti-gay? Do you still oppose gay marriage?” the audience member asked. 

“No, I’m not anti-gay,” Conaway insisted, “I just believe that marriage is between a man and a woman,” he said, in the perfect, textbook example of what anti-gay Republicans say.

Asked if he would support civil unions, Conaway gave it some thought for a moment, then returned with another typically bigoted line.

“I’m not opposed to to civil unions,” he responded. “Just don’t call it marriage.”

It’s stunning that the calendar reads 2017.

Even though he didn’t say it, here’s what Conaway really means:

“This thing we have, we don’t want to share it with your kind, so we’re going to pretend that even though we claim everyone’s equal, and even though what you have is the exact same thing as what we have, we’re going to pretend it’s not, because we just don’t like you.”

It’s getting real old, real fast.

If Conaway were just one of the 435 members of the House of Representative, it might be one thing (no, not really), but he’s been named to replace Rep. Devin Nunes on the House Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation.

Tommy Christopher at ShareBlue writes, “Conaway’s comments are not just hateful and bigoted; they are deeply ignorant. Marriage equality is no longer up for debate; it is a constitutionally guaranteed right.”

“Conaway’s ignorance makes him unfit to represent the people of his district, and just as surely, his cowardice and ignorance of the law make him unfit to lead the Trump/Russia investigation.”

It’s a great point. If Conaway can’t say that marriage equality is the law of the land, what other laws is he willing to ignore as he investigates Trump and Russia?
