5 Things for Wednesday

What You Need to Know to Start Your Day

Good morning!

It’s going to be a very big day.

It’s a drastic and dramatic redistribution of wealth, and it will not pay for itself – so it will skyrocket the deficit. It’s also a huge gift to President Trump and his family, who will save millions. Congress will have to pass it, so let’s hope we can expect a big fight.
  • The Friday midnight deadline to fund the government is looming. Will Trump become the first president whose party runs both houses of Congress to shut down the government? It’s looking less likely but nothing’s set in stone.
  • President Trump today will sign an executive order directing the Dept. of the Interior to review all national monuments designated by the past three presidents. Trump supposedly wants to ensure the conform to the Antiquities Act, but he in theory could try to reverse protections for vast swaths of land. It’s not clear he could win that battle in court. Among the designated landmarks he could try to remove protection from is the historic Stonewall Inn, part of LGBT history.
  • The full Senate wil attend a classified briefing at the White House today on North Korea. The Trump administration insists they are merely lending space for the event and have nothing to do with it. Don’t believe them. This is unprecedented and more saber-rattling.
  • This, just because it will make your day:
