White House Releases Statement on Allegations of Perjury Against Attorney General Jeff Sessions

In Surprising Switch, White House Attacks Democratic Senator, Not News Organization That Broke Story

In response to news that Attorney General Jeff Sessions may have committed perjury in his testimony during his confirmation hearing, the White House is pushing back, calling it a partisan attack.

“This is the latest attack against the Trump administration by partisan Democrats,” a statement from Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders (image) reads. “General Sessions met with the ambassador in an official capacity as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, which is entirely consistent with his testimony. It’s no surprise Senator Al Franken is pushing this story immediately following President Trump’s successful address to the nation.”

That’s actually not accurate.

Sessions met with the Russian Ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, at the Republican National Convention, where Sessions delivered a speech and was a top Trump surrogate.

Interestingly, the White House attacked Senator Franken, not the Washington Post, which broke the news late Wednesday night that Sessions met twice with Kislyak.

On another less important note, only in court proceedings is an attorney general addressed as “General.” The White House should brush up on its protocols. The proper form of address is “Mr.” as in, “Mr. Sessions met with the ambassador…”
