‘I Don’t Think There Was an Actual Tap of Trump Tower’

Republican House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes says he thinks President Donald Trump was wrong when he accused President Barack Obama of wiretapping him. Nunes, an 8-term U.S. Congressman from California, also says he doesn’t believe Trump Tower was wiretapped at all. 

“I don’t think there was an actual tap of Trump Tower,” Nunes told reporters at a joint press conference late Wednesday morning with Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Adam Schiff (D-CA). 

“We don’t have any evidence” that President Obama tapped Trump Tower, Nunes said, echoing his remarks from last week. “I don’t think there was an actual tap of Trump Tower.”

But Nunes, clearly working to ensure he chose his words very carefully, further indicted President Trump.

“Now you have to decide, as I mentioned to you last week, are you going to take the tweets literally? And if you are, then clearly the president was wrong,” he said. Nunes went on to lay out the plan for if people were to not take Trump’s tweets literally.

It’s important to remember exactly what Trump accused Obama of. So once again, here are the tweets:

Nunes has been under fire in recent weeks for refusing to allow further investigations into Russia’s hacking of the election,  and for refusing to investigate the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, especially Michael Flynn’s, and appearing to protect President Trump. In fact, Nunes happens to sit on the Trump Transition team’s executive committee. 

But those actions make his remarks minutes ago all the power powerful, and all the worse for the President.
