CNN’s Jake Tapper Slams White House: ‘Does Smearing British Intelligence Make Your Family More Safe?’

‘Damn Sure Isn’t National Security’ The White House Is Defending, CNN Anchor Says

An indignant Jake Tapper on “The Lead” Friday afternoon slammed the Trump White House for its continued defense of President Donald Trump’s lie that President Barack Obama wiretapped then-candidate and president-elect Trump. The CNN Chief Washington Correspondent and anchor told viewers that today Trump “refused to acknowledge that his White House had caused an international dust-up with our nation’s closest and important ally, the United Kingdom.”

Tapper explained that Sean Spicer on Thursday, in what at times was a heated press briefing, accused British Intelligence of spying on Trump to assist President Obama, a false claim made by Fox News’ Andrew Napolitano.

Spicer took Trump to task for not taking responsibility for the claim. Asked by a reporter about the accusation, which Spicer made by reading a transcript of Napolitano’s charges during the press briefing, Trump told the reporter to talk to Fox News.

“Hey, they’re the ones who said it,” Tapper, mocking Trump, said.

Warning that Spicer’s repeating Napolitano’s charge, that British Intelligence did Obama’s dirty work, Tapper asks, “Does smearing British Intelligence make your family more safe?”

And he answers, “No.”

“So why is the White House doing it? What is the White House defending? Because it damn sure isn’t national security,” Tapper concludes.
