Almost Two Out of Three Republicans Believe Russia Did Not Even Try to Interfere in the Election

Why does President Donald Trump continue to lie? His base believes anything he tells them.

If you’ve ever felt like maybe Republicans are living in a different world, this new CBS News poll will not change your mind.

The majority of Americans disapprove of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president. 52% of Americans, in fact, CBS finds. But well over 8 out of 10 Republicans say they approve of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president. Yes, 84 percent approve. Even 56% of independents, who tend to lean right, disapprove of Trump’s performance.

On Russia, Republicans are also living in a bubble.

Despite FBI Director James Comey announcing more than a week ago that the Bureau is conducting an investigation into Russia and the Trump team, almost two out of three Republicans – 64% – think Russia did not try to interfere in the election. Sixty-four percent!

Only 13% of Republicans think Russia interfered to help Trump. Overall, 50% of Americans think Russia interfered, either to help Trump or not.

It doesn’t get any better.

Almost six out of 10 Republicans, 59%, say it is not necessary for the F.B.I. to be investigating possible links between associates of the Trump campaign and the Russian government. 82% of Democrats think the FBI should be investigating.

Stunningly, 75% of Republicans say it is not likely that associates of Donald Trump’s campaign had improper communications with agents of the Russian government during the 2016 presidential election.

And 74% of Republicans say they think it is likely that Donald Trump’s offices were wiretapped, or under government surveillance, during the 2016 presidential campaign.
