Desperate Donald: Trump Threatens House Republicans They Will Lose Their Seats if They Don’t Pass TrumpCare

Is He Right?

President Donald Trump made a rare trip to Capitol Hill Tuesday morning to privately conference with House Republicans. The man who says he’s the greatest dealmaker is desperate, and saw fir to threaten GOP lawmakers. TrumpCare, the Republican plan to repeal and “replace” ObamaCare, is on life support. Overnight, Speaker Paul Ryan made changes to the legislation despite it having been voted on by three committees. Those changes will allow states to force some Medicaid recipients to have to work to keep their benefits, despite the fact that the vast majority of those on the health care program are not able to do so.

“Many of you came in on the pledge to repeal and replace Obamacare,” Trump told lawmakers, as Politico and others report. “I honestly think many of you will lose your seats in 2018 if you don’t get this done.”

Yes, President Trump laid down that threat.

Republicans under President Barack Obama voted to repeal ObamaCare more than 60 times.

But times have changed and ObamaCare now has majority support among Americans. Many who opposed the law as and even after it was passed have grown to embrace it.

Is Trump correct? If Republicans don’t vote to repeal ObamaCare and pass TrumpCare, will they lose their seats?

Famous statistician Nate Silver says he doesn’t think so. In fact, it might be that they will lose their seats if they vote to repeal ObamaCare.

Silver says that “health care is hurting Trump’s approval rating,” which sits at a dismal 37% or so, according to Gallup. And he notes that TrumpCare “is *really* unpopular.”
