12 Term Congressman Becomes First Republican to Call for Nunes to Recuse
Walls Closing in for Nunes
Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC), a 12-term U.S. Congressman has become the first Republican to call for Rep. Devin Nunes to recuse himself from Intelligence Committee investigations into the Trump team and Russia.Â
The Hill’s Scott Wong first reported the news via Twitter:
WALTER JONES tells me Intel Chair @DevinNunes should recuse himself from Russia election probe. Believe he is first GOPer to do so

The North Carolina Republican Congressman joins a growing list of Democrats, from Intel Vice Chair Adam Schiff, to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and many others, who are calling on Nunes to recuse. Nunes last week ran to the White House to share classified information with President Trump, despite there being ongoing counterintelligence investigations into the President and members of his team.
Nunes said he did so out of a sense of “duty” to the President, despite having the job of oversight of the White House.
On Tuesday, Nunes said he would not recuse.
Congressman Jones’ office confirmed his remarks via an email to NCRM.
UPDATE:
At The Hill, Wong writes:Â
“How can you be chairman of a major committee and do all these things behind the scenes and keep your credibility? You can’t keep your credibility,” Jones said just off the House floor.Â
“If anything has shown that we need a commission, this has done it by the way he has acted. That’s the only way you can bring integrity to the process. The integrity of the committee looking into this has been tainted.”
Jones is the only Republican co-sponsor on a measure from Reps. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) that would establish an independent commission to probe Russian interference in the U.S. election.Â
