Warren Blasts Trump For Firing U.S. Attorney: He Only Wants “Tame Prosecutors Who Won’t Investigate Him”

“You can’t fire the rule of law,” Democrat says

Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren took to Twitter on Sunday to respond to President Donald Trump’s decision to fire a high-profile U.S. attorney who had refused to resign.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, of the Southern District of New York, has a reputation for investigating political corruption and white collar crime, earning him the nickname, “the sheriff of Wall Street.” Bharara also had jurisdiction over Trump tower, and last week he was asked to investigate the president’s foreign business dealings.

On Saturday, Bharara was fired after refusing a request form Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign, even though Trump told Bharara in November that he would keep his job under the new president’s administration. On Sunday, Warren kicked off an eight-part tweetstorm by noting that Trump “talked a big game about getting corruption out of gov[ernment],” referring to his campaign pledge to “drain the swamp.”

“But he wants a bunch of tame prosecutors who won’t investigate him” Warren wrote, calling Bharara a “fearless prosecutor who stands up to both parties and Wall Street.”

“I guess that’s why Trump fired him,” Warren said, adding that Trump only wants people like Sessions in the Justice Department, adding that the AG is “a loyalist who lied to the Senate about meeting with the Russians.”

“You can’t fire the rule of law,” Warren wrote, addressing Trump. “You can’t shut down ongoing investigations by career prosecutors.”

She concluded by pledging a “massive fight” if Trump tries to replace the “real prosecutors” he fired with “cronies.”
