Nunes: I Could Have Snuck Onto the White House Grounds if I Wanted To

Chairman’s Comments Draw Outrage and Mockery

Rep. Devin Nunes, under fire for his strange behavior and for saying it is his “duty” to defend President Donald Trump, Monday evening added to the confusion and calls for him to step down from his post as Chair of the House Intelligence Committee. Appearing on CNN, Nunes responded to questions about why he went to the White House last Tuesday night to meet with a “source” and view documents in a secured location known as a SCIF (pronounced “skiff”) instead of using one of several SCIFs available to him on the grounds of Congress.

Nunes told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer he wasn’t “sneaking around,” and he saw “many foreign dignitaries” while on the White House grounds, and his visit was not at night, as previously, widely reported.

“If I really wanted to, I could have snuck onto the grounds late at night, and probably no one would have seen me,” Nunes said. That comment drew both outrage and mockery.

Nunes’ interview also drew the attention of Intelligence Committee Vice Chair Adam Schiff, who issued a statement calling on Nunes to recuse himself from investigations into the Trump campaign and transition team.
