Mulvaney On Healthcare Debacle: “Washington Is A Lot More Broken Than Trump Thought”

“This place was a lot more rotten than we thought it was, than I thought it was, because I’ve been here for six years,” former congressman says

President Donald Trump’s budget director, Mick Mulvaney, said Sunday that the GOP’s effort to repeal and replace Obamacare failed because, “Washington is a lot more broken than Trump thought it was.”

Mulvaney, a former congressman, was a co-founder of the right-wing Freedom Caucus, which helped defeat Trumpcare. On Sunday morning, Trump blasted the Freedom Caucus for allegedly saving Obamacare and Planned Parenthood.

“I think there’s probably plenty of blame to go around,” Mulvaney told NBC News’ “Meet The Press.”

“I think what happened is that Washington won,” he added. “I think the one thing we learned this week is that Washington is a lot more broken than President Trump thought it was.”

Host Chuck Todd then pointed out that if Washington is broken it’s Republicans’s responsibility, given that they took over the House in 2010, the Senate in 2014, and the White House this year.

“I think, more importantly, we haven’t been able to change Washington in the first 65 days,” Mulvaney responded. “This place was a lot more rotten than we thought it was, than I thought it was, because I’ve been her for six years. … I never thought it would come to this.”
