President Donald Trump just posted a tweet calling for an investigation into Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer’s ties to Russia and Vladimir Putin. In what some are calling a joke, Trump included a 2003 AP photo of the Senator from New York and Russia’s Putin in New York City having coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts.Â
We should start an immediate investigation into @SenSchumer and his ties to Russia and Putin. A total hypocrite! pic.twitter.com/Ik3yqjHzsA

That photo was published overnight by the far right wing blog Gateway Pundit, run by Jim Hoft, a man who has been dubbed the “stupidest man on the internet” for publishing years worth of fake news, conspiracy theories, hoaxes, and falsehoods. Hoft’s website was recently given press credentials by Sean Spicer’s White House Press Office.

Assistant to the President and President Trump’s Director of Social Media posted the photo early Friday morning in response to Senator Schumer’s tweet saying, “we have an obligation to get to the truth. We must evaluate the scope of Russia’s interference in our election.”

Presumably Trump thought it wise to repost the image to attack the top Democrat who has called for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign.
Some responses via Twitter:
@RobertMaguire_ @CahnEmily Omfg, this is the shit the POTUS is doing in his spare time. Like a teenage girl with a score to settle.
