GOP Congressman: Trump Should Apologize To Obama, Britain For Wiretapping Claim

“We’re living in a very dangerous world. We can’t do this alone,” Rep. Will Hurd says

Texas Republican Congressman Will Hurd is calling on President Donald Trump to apologize to both President Barack Obama and Britain for his baseless allegation that they somehow colluded to wiretap his campaign last year.  

“To quote my 85-year-old father, Bob Hurd, who has given this advice to all of my friends when they got married, it never hurts to say you’re sorry,” Hurd told ABC News’ “This Week” (video above).

“So you think the president should say he’s sorry?” host George Stephanapoulos said.

“I think so,” Hurd responded. “I think it helps with our allies. We’ve got to make sure we’re all working together. We’re living in a very dangerous world. We can’t do this alone. When we have a major ally — it’s not just sorry to the president, but also to the [United Kingdom] for the claims, or the intimation, that the UK was involved in this as well. It doesn’t hurt, and it takes away from the rest of his agenda.”

FBI Director James Comey is expected to address Trump’s claim when he testifies before the House Intelligence Committee on Monday. 

Other GOP members of Congress, including Rep. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, have vowed to “get to the bottom” of Trump’s wiretapping claim. But Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Sunday that, “there is no bottom.” 

“I hope we can put an end to this wild goose chase,” Schiff told NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”

“What the president said was just patently false, and the wrecking ball it created now has banged into our British allies and our German allies,” Schiff added. “It’s continuing to grow in terms of damage, and he needs to put an end to this. 

“I suspect what’s really at root here is, this is just how the president does business,” Schiff said. “Now, maybe this is the way he conducted his real estate business with half-truths and sometimes no truths and lot of bluster. That, in my opinion, is no way to run a business, but it’s an even worse way to run a country. It’s dangerous to us.”
