Congressman Who Told Americans to Not Buy a New iPhone but Health Care Has an iPhone

Cell Phone Bills Paid for By His Campaign

The Chairman of the powerful House Oversight Committee defended Republicans’ new ObamaCare “replacement” bill Tuesday morning by telling Americans they have to make choices and should not buy a new iPhone, but rather, health insurance. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) was immediately denounced for his condescending remarks. Many attacked the Republican Congressman noting his health care is paid for by the American people. 

“You know what?” Chaffetz said. “Americans have choices. And they’ve got to make a choice. And so maybe rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love and they want to go spend hundreds of dollars on, maybe they should invest in their own healthcare.”

As it turns out, Rep. Chaffetz’s health care isn’t the only thing he doesn’t have to pay for.

As The Intercept’s Lee Fang just noted on Twitter, Chaffetz’s PAC, his campaign committee known as Friends of Jason Chaffetz, this past summer spent over $700 at an Apple store in Salt Lake City, according to a federal filing:

Not only that, but Fang also noted that Chaffetz’s monthly cell phone bill is paid for by his PAC:

So, while it’s easy for Chaffetz to attack Americans he sees as poor, needy, and poor at managing their money, perhaps he should start paying his own bills, like health care, iPhones, and cell service, so he knows what that actually feels like.
