Breaking: Supreme Court Rejects Appeal in Gavin Grimm Transgender Rights Case

Bad News for Transgender People

In a setback for the civil rights of transgender people, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal sought by the ACLU, representing Gavin Grimm, a transgender teenaged boy suing for the right to use boys’ restrooms in his Virginia high school.

The Court sent the case back to the lower court, but it also vacated the lower court’s ruling, in a disturbing move, citing the Trump Justice Department’s new position.

“The judgment is vacated, and the case is remanded to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit for further consideration in light of the guidance document issued by the Department of Education and Department of Justice on February 22, 2017,” the Court’s short statement reads.
