BREAKING: Bill Falsely Claiming to ‘Repeal’ North Carolina’s HB2 Passes Legislature, Heads to Governor
Head to Governor Cooper’s Desk, Where He Will Sign It
A highly controversial bill Republicans falsely claim repeals the unconstitutional law known as HB2 has just passed the State House of Representatives, by a vote of 70-48. Earlier Thursday the bill passed the State Senate. It now heads to Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat, who will sign it into law.
The bill does not repeal HB2. It still provides a ban for transgender people from using public accommodations that correspond with their gender identity. It also places a nearly four-year moratorium on all localities – cities, towns, counties – from enacting any non-discrimination ordinances.
LGBT activists and organizations strongly oppose the bill.
Lawmakers announced and passed the bill in about a 13 hour period, attempting to beat the NCAA’s noon deadline. If it did not become law North Carolina would be locked out of NCAA games for the next five years.
More details to follow – stay tuned.
UPDATE I: 1:56 PM EDT –
It’s important to note that just as the Republicans rammed HB2 through the legislature and into law, in just about 13 hours, so did they ram this bill through the legislature. No public notice or comment was allowed, proving once again that North Carolina Republicans have no interest in governing, but are solely focused on ruling.
UPDATE II: 2:39 PM EDT –
Buzzfeed’s Dominic Holden posted this ACLU letter urging the governor to not sign the bill:
