WATCH: Betsy DeVos Blocked From Entering Public School by Protestors
Shame! Shame! Shame!
Newly-confirmed Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was blocked by protestors from entering a Washington, D.C. area public school Friday morning. Chanting “Shame! Shame! Shame!” activists, holding Black Lives Matter signs, shouted, “She does not represent anything that they stand for.”
Another protestor, chasing DeVos and a man who appeared to be her security aide, said, “She’s giving money to senators and buying her way into positions – you should be so proud of yourself!”
As reporters followed DeVos to her government SUV, a man yelled, “Go back!” then ran around to the front of the auto, holding up his sign, and placed his hand on the hood of the car.

DeVos, who is remarkably unqualified, made history by becoming the first cabinet nominee needing the vice president’s vote to break a 50-50 tie to be confirmed.
She is an anti-public school activist who has used her vast wealth to fuel her political agenda, which included greatly remaking the Michigan school system into a charter school haven with little accountability.Â
“The academic rank of Michigan students compared with peers in other states has dropped dramatically since DeVos’s biggest policy victories: the expansion of charter schools (most run by for-profit companies), and breaking down barriers to students attending schools outside their home district, known as school choice,” MLive, the online consortium of Michigan’s top newspapers, wrote in December.
UPDATE: 11:48 AM EST –
The Washington Post reports DeVos did gain access to the school via another entrance. Parents and union members “greeted” her outside with signs saying “We love our public schools.”
According to several sources, teachers at the school were upset by her visit and planned to wear black to show their feelings.
Outside Jefferson Friday morning, a teacher from a D.C. charter school, who declined to be named, carried a sign that said: “Ms. DeVos: Our children are not props.â€
“Betsy DeVos does not represent our students or our families here in D.C.,†the teacher said. “She doesn’t have our best interests at heart.â€
It appears DeVos’ initial plan was to enter the school through a side or back door, where she was met by the protestors above, and forced to enter through what appears to be the front door.
