Rex Tillerson Has Just Been Confirmed as Secretary of State

Former Exxon-Mobil CEO Has Strong Relationship With Vladimir Putin

In a major win for President Donald Trump, the U.S. Senate has just voted to confirm Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. A simple majority was needed. Tillerson passed with 56 “aye” votes, and 43 “nay” votes.

Democrat Elizabeth Warren voted against him, warning of his tied to Russia, which intervened in the U.S. election.

The New York Times calls the vote among the “most contentious” in recent history for Secretary of State.

In the past 50 years, the most contentious confirmations for secretary of state were those of Condoleezza Rice in 2005, who passed by a vote of 85 to 13, and Henry Kissinger in 1973, who was confirmed 78 to 7,” the Times notes.

In 2009, one day after President Barack Obama took office, the Senate confirmed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State in a 94-2 vote.
