Republicans Have Postponed the Final Vote on Betsy DeVos to Monday

Confirmation Hangs by One Thread

For the second time Republicans have had to postpone a vote on Betsy DeVos, the deep-pocketed anti-public education activist who is President Donald Trump’s nominee to become Secretary of Education. On January 10 Republicans were forced to postpone her committee vote. On Wednesday, two Republican Senators announced they would vote against her confirmation. Should any other Republican make that same choice, DeVos would not have enough votes to be confirmed. And that is with the vote of Senator Jeff Sessions, who has been advanced to the full Senate for a vote on his nomination as Attorney General, and with, for the first time in history, the vice president casting the final vote to break what would be a tie.

Yes, Republicans are literally forced to holdup the vote for attorney general to ensure he can vote for the embattled Education nominee.

DeVos is not only opposed to public education and the funds invested into it, but has a history of anti-gay comments, including calling same-sex marriage “the destruction of our traditions and the coarsening of our culture.” She also accused Democrats of wanting to “redefine the most fundamental institution of man kind,” and called “marriage between one man and one woman … an institution that was created not by man, but by God.”

And while it shouldn’t matter, this doesn’t help:

The Hill reports the final vote for DeVos will take place on Monday.
