Press Secretary Confirms Trump Has Known About Flynn’s Lie for Weeks

‘We’ve Been Reviewing and Evaluating This Issue, With Respect to Gen. Flynn, for a Few Weeks’

Aboard Air Force One President Donald Trump on Friday was asked by reporters about “reports that Gen. Flynn had conversations with the Russians about sanctions” before he was sworn in as President. The President, standing with Melania Trump, made a face, shook his head no, and said: “I don’t know about that, I haven’t seen it. What report is that?” Trump asked.

The Bloomberg News reporter responded, telling the President the report was from The Washington Post.

“I haven’t seen that. I’ll look at that” Trump said.

President Trump, it turns out, answered that question very carefully, because, as White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer revealed Tuesday afternoon during the daily briefing, the President has known for weeks that his now-former National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn, had lied when he claimed he had not discussed with Russian officials the sanctions President Barack Obama imposed on Russia at any point during his five telephone calls with Russian officials the same day the sanctions were announced.

To be clear, Spicer told reporters, “We’ve been reviewing and evaluating this issue, with respect to Gen. Flynn, for a few weeks, trying to ascertain the truth.”

So while Trump did not exactly lie, he certainly was not straightforward with reporters.

Spicer also contradicted earlier information from the White House that Gen. Flynn made the decision to resign, instead saying that Monday night Presdent Trump asked for Flynn’s resignation.

Spicer also went to great lengths to shape the narrative that Flynn has done nothing wrong, and the only reason he was fired was because the president lost trust in him. Apparently, it took the president three weeks for that trust to be lost, despite specifics from Sally Yates, the acting head of the Dept. of Justice, whom Trump fired when she refused to defend his likely illegal Muslim ban in court.

It seems increasingly clear that Trump fired Flynn only when the media made the heat unbearable.

Which should tell you everything you need to know about this administration.

UPDATE: 2:22 PM EST –
Speaking on MSNBC, Sen. Angus King (I-ME) just called this news a “bombshell.”
