Leading Democrat Asks House Oversight Chair to Investigate Kellyanne Conway’s ‘Free Commercial’

‘Potential Disciplinary Action’

Democratic U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings is requesting the House Oversight Committee investigate Kellyanne Conway’s remarks for “potential disciplinary action.” Conway, while speaking from inside the White House, with the White House logo and the American flag in the background, Thursday morning urged “Fox & Friends” viewers to “go buy Ivanka’s stuff.” She even announced she was giving the president’s daughter a “free commercial.”

“This appears to be a textbook violation of government ethics laws and regulations enacted to prevent the abuse of an employee’s government position,” Cummings, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, wrote in a letter to Rep. Jason Chaffetz. “Since the Committee has direct jurisdiction over the ethics laws applicable to White House employees, I request that the Committee make an official referral of this matter to the Office of Government Ethics and request that it report back to the Committee as soon as possible with its findings.”

Multiple ethics experts agree Conway violate the federal rule, which carries the weight of law.

CNN Money reports Chairman Chaffetz did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but just one day ago the Utah Republican who promised to continue to investigate Hillary Clinton even after the election told CNN he did not see any problem with the President’s tweet attacking Nordstrom for dropping Ivanka’s clothing line. Hew also insisted he would not go on a “fishing expedition” just to find something wrong with the president’s actions.
