Betsy DeVos-Led Education Dept. Misspells Civil Rights Leader’s Name

Trump Administration’s 2nd Major Black History Month Gaffe

UPDATE: After about three hours, the education department finally attempted to correct the tweet, but in doing so made another mistake, writing “our deepest apologizes” instead of “our deepest apologies”:

Finally, the correction was fixed:

ORIGINAL POST:

The U.S. Department of Education, which is now led by Betsy DeVos, grossly misspelled the name of civil rights leader W.E.B. Du Bois on Twitter on Sunday morning.

“Education must not simply teach work – it must teach life. – W.E.B. DeBois,” the department wrote on its official Twitter account.

Again, it’s “Du Bois” — two words, and with a “u” instead of an “e.”

The misspelling marks the Trump administration’s second major Black History Month gaffe. The first came when Trump suggested that abolitionist Frederick Douglass is still alive.

A few responses from Twitter.
