Will Democrats Unite?
Voting members of the Democratic National Committee have just elected Tom Perez as the new chairman of the Democratic Party. Perez, a civil rights attorney who served as President Barack Obama’s Secretary of Labor is seen by some to represent the so-called Obama wing of the party. His chief challenger, Rep. Keith Ellison, is seen to represent the so-called Bernie Sanders wing. Those characterizations are misleading, limiting, and unfair to both who have served the party and the voters well.
The final vote was 235-200.
Perez called for Ellison to become Deputy Chair:
Perez’s first act as DNC chair is to move for Ellison to be deputy chair. Voters unanimously approve it.

“I am asking you to give everything you can to support Chairman Perez,” Ellison urged Democrats. “If we waste even a moment going after who supported who,” Ellison said. “We don’t have that luxury.”

Perez after the first round of voting was within one vote of winning the election.
Wow. 427 votes cast for DNC. Threshold for a win is 214.5. @TomPerez gets 213.5–a single vote short. Ellison at 200 votes. Onto 2nd ballot.

NCRM was the first news outlet to call for the chair of the DNC to be a full-time job, and for no one to be elected who has any other function. (The DNC charter also calls for the chair to be a full-time job, and the RNC’s chair always has been.)
In November, less than two days after Donald Trump officially won the presidency, we wrote an editorial opposing anyone, (Ellison’s name was being floated,) if they did not make being chair their full-time job, resigning all others. One month later Ellison announced he would resign from Congress if elected chair.
In the form of an open letter to the DNC, we wrote: “It’s time for a dedicated full-time Chairman or Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.”
An excerpt from our editorial:
The DNC has presided over one of the worst decades of Democratic losses, and at the local, state, and national levels we continue to lose tremendous ground.Â
This is historic.
Republicans next year will control the White House.
Republicans next year will control the U.S. Senate.Â
Republicans next year will control the U.S. House.Â
Republicans next year will control the Supreme Court.
Republicans next year will control 34 governors’ offices – matching the all-time high set in 1922. Literally two out of every three governorships.
Republicans next year will control 68 out of 98 state legislative chambers. Literally more than two out of every three.
In 23 states – nearly half the nation – Republicans will control both houses of the state legislatures and the governor’s office.
“For only the second time since 1929, the Republican Party will control the House, Senate, the White House, most governorships and state houses, and will decide a Supreme Court pick,” The Week observed Wednesday, in the wake of stunning and extensive losses at every level of elected government.
Americans know all too well the accusations against former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and interim DNC Chair Donna Brazile, and this is not the forum to address those.Â
But for a moment, let’s address the fact that Democrats have just lost the expected control of the White House and expected control of the Senate, and, for a brief shining moment, the glimmer of hope of controlling the House.
The Republican Party is kicking our collective asses.
As a result, children right this minute are being bullied by their fellow classmates who support Donald Trump. Women, Hispanics, Muslims, LGBT people, and other minorities are all reporting acts of physical and emotional violence and hate, all in the name of President-elect Donald Trump.
There now is no real leader of the Democratic Party.
In towns, cities, states, and nationally, Democrats have not only lost a lot of ground, we have no bench.Â
Who is in line and prepared to challenge Donald Trump in 2020 – a race we should all be thinking about this very minute?
Who is in line and prepared to challenge Republican Congressmen and Senators in 2018?
People are hurting today, people are in real pain today, and the DNC is supposed to be the uniting, organizing force to set the groundwork to help move America forward on a progressive path.
This is about doing your job. One job.
Being Chairman of any large organization is a full time job. At least, it should be.
It is not being a figurehead, not if you want real change to occur.
Why is the Chairman of the Republican National Committee always a full-time position, yet the Chair of the DNC is always given to an existing elected Democrat with full-time duties?
How has that worked out for us?Â
Can you honestly say that a Congressman, Senator, or Governor has enough free time to lead an organization, especially one as beleaguered as the DNC?
It’s time to wake up.
It’s time to stop everything you’re doing and clean house. It’s time to stop everything you’re doing, realize you have gotten it all wrong, and reorganize.
This, along with re-uniting a party is what faces Perez from this moment forward.
We can unite to support and guide him, or we can continue infighting. The former will deliver Americans from Donald Trump. The latter will deliver America to the ashbin of what was democracy.
The choice is yours.

‘Blood Everywhere’ and ‘The World Is Dead’: Prosecutor Details Accused School Mass Shooter’s Alarming Note
Oakland County, Michigan prosecutor Karen McDonald revealed a teacher was so alarmed by a note she saw on Ethan Crumbley‘s desk the morning of the shooting she took a photo of it with her cell phone and alerted school administrators. Hours later eleven students would be shot. Four of them died.
That note, McDonald revealed, “contained the following: a drawing of a semi-automatic handgun pointing at the words, ‘the thoughts won’t stop help me.’ In another section of the note was a drawing of a bullet with the following words above that bullet: ‘blood everywhere.’ Between the drawing of the gun and the bullet is a drawing of a person who appears to have been shot twice and bleeding. Below that figure is a drawing of a laughing emoji. Further down the drawing are the words, ‘my life is useless,’ and to the right of that are the words, ‘The world is dead.'”
Crumbley, 15, is the accused Oakland High School mass shooter who is now facing murder and terrorism charges and is being charged as an adult. On Friday McDonald announced she is charging his parents with four counts of homicide involuntary manslaughter.
“As a result,” of the teacher finding the note, McDonald told reporters, “James and Jennifer Crumbley were immediately summoned to the school. A school counselor came to the classroom and removed the shooter and brought him to the office with his backpack.”
She says the school counselor had obtained the note but Crumbley “had already altered it.”
“The drawings of the gun and the bloody figure were scratched out along with the words ‘help me,’ and ‘my life is useless,’ ‘The world is dead,’ and ‘blood everywhere.’ Those were all altered by him”.
“At the meeting James and Jennifer Crumbley were shown the drawing and were advised that they were required to get their son into counseling within 48 hours. Both James and Jennifer Crumbley failed to ask their son if he had his gun with him, or where his gun was located, and failed to inspect his backpack for the presence of the gun, which he had with him.”
McDonald says the parents “resisted the idea of … their son leaving the school at that time. Instead, James and Jennifer promptly left the high school without their son. He was returned to the classroom.”
The mass shooting began shortly thereafter.
Ethan Crumbley is accused of murdering four of his classmates and wounding seven others. The students who died are Hana St. Juliana, 14; Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; and Justin Shilling, 17.

Prosecutor Reveals Disturbing Texts, Involuntary Manslaughter Charges Against Parents of Michigan High School Accused Shooter
The parents of 15-year old Ethan Crumbley, the accused Oxford High School mass shooter, have been charged with four counts of homicide involuntary manslaughter, CNN reports. The prosecutor also revealed a disturbing text exchange between Crumbley and his mother.
Crumbley, who is being charged as an adult. is accused of murdering four Michigan high school students and wounding seven others in the deadliest school shooting in at least three years. He faces charges including terrorism and murder.
“The semiautomatic handgun recovered in the attack was bought by the suspect’s father on Nov. 26, four days before the shooting, the county sheriff has said,” CNN adds. “Prosecutors are considering information regarding the purchase of the gun and its accessibility and storage, along with other details. The weapon is a 9mm Sig Sauer SP2022 pistol, authorities have said.”
Friday afternoon Oakland County, Michigan, prosecutor Karen McDonald (photo) in a news conference said the charges against Crumbley’s parents are intended to hold the individuals who contributed to this tragedy accountable,” and to “send a message.”
In a stunning development McDonald told reporters a teacher had caught “Ethan Crumbley searching ‘ammunition’ on his cell phone in class” and reported it to school officials. School officials contacted Crumbley’s mother via a voicemail and via an email “but received no response from either parent.”
“Thereafter,” McDonald continued, “Jennifer Crumbley exchanged text messages with her son on that day, stating: ‘LOL. I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught.'”

Newsmax Host Falsely Attacks Biden and Entire Democratic Party for Declaring ‘War on Christianity’
A host on the far right wing cable and streaming TV channel Newsmax has declared the entire Democratic Party, including its devoutly-Catholic President, has “declared war,” not on just Christmas, but on “Christianity” itself. That would be extremely surprising to the majority of Democratic registered voters who self-identify as Christian.
The revelation of a “war on Christianity” comes in a wide-ranging attack on the left from the Newsmax host Friday morning, who decided to attack the White House’s highly-praised Christmas decorations this year, which were designed by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.
“This week is about Christmas at the White House,” the host declared. “I love Christmas decorations. But this looks a little like a Carnival Cruise especially from an administration and political party as a whole that has declared war on Christianity for a while now.”
