Mexico Repeatedly Has Refused to Pay for Trump’s Wall

Donald Trump’s number one campaign promise was so well-known to his supporters it became party of his stump speech schtick. 

“Who’s going to pay for the wall?” Trump would ask at every campaign rally.

“Mexico!” his supporters, on cue, would shout.

Here’s an iconic example:

But now, Donald Trump’s transition team is asking taxpayers to foot the bill, and turning to Congress before he’s even sworn in, to begin drafting the appropriations bill and have it funded by April.

“The move would break a key campaign promise when Trump repeatedly said he would force Mexico to pay for the construction of the wall along the border, though in October, Trump suggested for the first time that Mexico would reimburse the US for the cost of the wall,” CNN reports.

There is no guarantee or mechanism to force Mexico to reimburse U.S. taxpayers for the cost of a wall between the two countries, and Mexico has repeatedly said it will not pay for it. In one iconic moment, former Mexico president Vicente Fox very colorfully said he’s “not going to pay for that f*cking wall.”

A furious Trump took to Twitter early Friday morning to bash the media for “not reporting” that Mexico will reimburse Americans for building the wall, despite many reporting Trump’s claim they will.

Again, there is no guarantee Mexico’s citizens have any desire to do so, especially given how Trump has treated them.
