WATCH LIVE: Senate Committee Hearing for Trump’s Anti-LGBT, Anti-Public Schools Nominee to Be Secretary of Education
Betsy DeVos Has Donated Large Sums to Help Support Anti-LGBT Efforts
Betsy DeVos, an anti-LGBT and anti-public schools activist will appear before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee at 5 PM EST Tuesday afternoon. Like most of Trump’s nominees, DeVos is remarkably unqualified for the role.
DeVos, a charter schools advocate, virulently opposes public schools. She would like to move all public funds that support public education over to private and charter schools.
Not only is that dangerous, but thanks to DeVos, charter schools in her home state of Michigan are under the least amount of regulation imaginable, yet soak up public funds.Â
DeVos, a billionaire who likes to spend money on her projects, has donated large sums to help support efforts banning same-sex marriage. She has donated at least a half-million dollars to the National Organization For Marriage (NOM) and hundreds of thousands of dollars to efforts to fight marriage equality.
Republicans are pushing DeVos’ confirmation process through, even though, like several of Trump’s nominees, “the Office for Government Ethics — which is responsible for vetting presidential nominees for potential conflicts of interest — has not finished its review of DeVos’s vast wealth and financial investments,” as The Washington Post reports.
Despite DeVos’ activism, there is no substantive proof that overall children do better in charter schools than in public schools.
Hearings begin at 5 PM. Watch:
