WATCH: Kellyanne Conway Falsely Claims House GOP Has ‘Mandate’ to Gut Congressional Ethics Office
‘It’s Not Like We’re Taking Away Everything’ Conway Says, Blurring Lines Between Legislative and Executive Branches
Kellyanne Conway says House Republicans have been given a “mandate” by the American people to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), which they began to do in a surprise private closed door vote Monday night.Â
“Let’s make clear that you’re still going to have an Office of Complaint Review,†said Conway, who will serve as a White House Counselor to President Donald Trump. “In other words, it’s not like we’re taking away everything,†Conway said, blurring what are supposed to be very clear lines between the executive and legislative branches. She made her remarks in a Tuesday morning interview with “Good Morning America†host George Stephanopoulos.
“Look, there’s a very ambitious agenda to push forward,†Conway continued. “The Republicans have been given the majority in the House and the Senate, most of the governorships, they’ve won over 1,000 state legislative seats under President Obama’s watch. So there’s a mandate there for them to make significant change.â€

It’s unclear how voters gave House Republicans a mandate to gut the OCE when most Americans don’t know it exists, don’t know what it does, and if anything, those who voted for Donald Trump voted to “drain the swamp.” Gutting the OCE is the exact opposite of that.
In speaking with ABC’s “Good Morning America” and MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Tuesday morning, Conway admitted she had not discussed the House GOP’s move with the president-elect. It’s unclear why she would make the morning show rounds and weigh in on a issue that she had not discussed with Trump, as she is seen as his representative.Â
