After Massive and Immediate Outcry Trump Administration Walks Back Tariff on Mexico’s Goods to Pay for Wall

‘They are RUNNING this back’

Less than one week into his presidency Donald Trump’s press secretary announced he had made the decision to break his central campaign promise, that Mexico will pay for the wall. About two hours ago Sean Spicer told reporters on Air Force One that the president had made the decision to impose a 20 percent tariff on all imports coming into the U.S. from Mexico. In other words, American consumers and manufacturers would be paying for the wall, not Mexico.

“In a brief gaggle on the way back from Philadelphia, Sean Spicer appeared to make some news by saying that POTUS has decided how to pay for the border wall:  by imposing a 20 percent tax on all imports from Mexico,” the White House press pool report states.

“He did not give any details about that tax, how it would work, and he described it as a beginning of a process that would be part of overall tax reform. But he did describe this as a decision that POTUS has made.”

Let’s repeat that: “he did describe this as a decision that POTUS has made.”

Spicer’s announcement came hours after Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto not only repeated his promise to never pay for Donald Trump’s wall, but canceled a scheduled trip to meet with President Trump out of “regret” that Trump had signed an executive order to build the wall.

It also came one hour after Trump himself vowed to fellow Republicans at a GOP retreat in Philadelphia that Americans would never pay for the wall, and he would make Mexico pay.

After intense and immediate outrage, the White House is now walking back the announcement.

NBC News national correspondent Peter Alexander posted this tweet:

Again, Spicer told reporters the president had made the decision.

So now a decision that was announcd to the press is merely an option the president is considering.

Here’s how reporters and media pros on Twitter responded:

Bottom line: the Trump administration has no idea what they’re doing, and they’re creating chaos.

Maybe that’s their goal…

Donald Trump foments violence and hate, is a serial liar, a racist, a misogynist, a supporter of white nationalism, a fascistic bully, an authoritarian thug, a sexual assault and adultery braggart, a hypocrite, a defrauder, and is a danger to civil rights, freedom of the press, and peace around the world.
