WATCH: Trump Admits “Lock Her Up” Was Gimmick, Thanks Black Voters Who Stayed Home

“That plays great before the election. Now, we don’t care, right?” He Says Of “Lock Her Up” Chant

President-elect Donald Trump acknowledged on Friday that his threats during the presidential campaign to jail opponent Hillary Clinton were merely a political ploy.

During Trump’s appearance in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as part of his post-election “Thank You Tour,” chants of “lock her up” broke out – as they often did during his campaign rallies.

“No, it’s okay,” Trump responded (video above). “Forget it. That plays great before the election. Now, we don’t care, right?”

During the second presidential debate, Trump threatened to appoint a special prosecutor to look into Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state. But he backed off that pledge shortly after the election, saying he doesn’t “want to hurt the Clintons.”

Also in Grand Rapids on Friday, Trump said he owed his victory in part to black Americans who didn’t vote in the election.

“The African-American community was great to us. They came through big league,” Trump said. “If they had any doubt, they didn’t vote, and that was almost as good, because a lot of people didn’t show up, because they felt good about me.”
Exit polls showed Clinton defeated Trump among black voters, 89 percent to 8 percent.
