U.S. Senator Roy Moore? Alabama Governor Considering Disgraced, Suspended Chief Justice

Moore Suspended for Directing Judges to Not Issue Marriage Licenses to Same-Sex Couples

Disgraced and suspended Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore is under consideration to replace U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions, who is Donald Trump’s nominee to become U.S. Attorney General. Moore is currently under suspension for the rest of his elected term for having sent a letter to all state probate judges ordering them to not issue any marriage licenses to same-sex couples, despite a federal judge’s ruling and the U.S. Supreme Court’s Obergefell ruling.

Republican Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, who is also under a cloud of ethics issues, has interviewed Moore for the position, The Hill reports. Governors generally are allowed to replace a U.S. Senator who leaves office before their term is complete, and generally are given wide latitude to do so.

Moore is not the sole candidate for Sessions’ seat, but he is the best-known. Moore has substantial support from conservatives across the state. He is age-limited from running for his Supreme Court Chief Justice position, and has been rumored to be interested in running to become governor.
