Trump Eyes Conway’s Hubby For Solicitor General Despite Lack Of Experience, Potential Conflicts

George Conway Has Argued Only 1 Case Before Supreme Court

President-elect Donald Trump may tap his former campaign manager’s husband, George Conway, as solicitor general, even though he appears to be totally unqualified for the position and would undoubtedly lack any independence from the White House.

Kellyanne Conway, known as “the Trump whisperer,” served as the president-elect’s campaign manager and was recently appointed to serve as his special counselor in the White House. Her husband, George Conway, is a partner at New York corporate law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

Now, George Conway reportedly is on Trump’s short list for solicitor general, the third-ranking official in the Justice Department who argues cases on the federal government’s behalf at the U.S. Supreme Court.

According to Bloomberg Politics, which first reported he’s being considered, George Conway would be “an unusual choice” for the position.

“His law firm biography lists only one Supreme Court case he has argued — a 2010 dispute involving the overseas reach of federal securities law,” Bloomberg reports. “People who have held the post previously have generally had extensive Supreme Court experience, or, like former Harvard Law School Dean Elena Kagan, served in a prominent academic position.”

Conway’s appointment would raise questions about the level of White House involvement with the solicitor general’s office.

“Although solicitors general ultimately answer to the president, they traditionally make most of their decisions independently of the White House,” according to Bloomberg.
